StanJames is a well known name amongst sports betting enthusiasts and so already has a good reputation in the UK. With their online poker offering extending the services they offer they will no doubt tempt many of their existing customers as well as generating plenty of new ones. This could explain the thousands of players always online at the tables, even at off-peak times. While their client and web site aren't quite as slick as some of the other players in our top ten there are still lots of high value tournaments to enter and a variety of different game types to suit every taste.
Signing up to StanJames Poker is completely free and can be achieved through their website or via the downloadable client. Once signed up you are free to try out the play money tables without depositing anything so it's easy to give it a try and see if it's for you. The downloadable client is pretty average in terms of looks, but functions just as well as any other we have seen. It's easy to find your way about and you won't accidentally bet your whole stack! We like the fact that StanJames offers an in-browser version of the client as well, but this only seems to work in certain browsers as far as we tested. However, if you do get it working it's actually quite neat, although not quite as good as the desktop client.
There are lots of different tournaments to try out on StanJames Poker so if you are bored with the usual standard offering at other sites why not try out tournaments such as "The Cage" or one of the bounty style ones. There are live leaderboards for the big ones so you can see where you stand in relation to other players on the site after every game. Even if you are a new player you can get involved in the action as on sign up you are guaranteed free entry to three tournaments each with guaranteed prizes of EUR 500. This is a great deal, although even if you have to pay tournament entry it is still pretty reasonably priced. There are also no less than two freeroll tournaments every day which you can enter just by using your loyalty points.
Loyalty points are built up in a fairly typical way on StanJames poker with the amount you get based on the rake in cash games and set at a fixed rate per dollar of tournament entry fee you pay. Unlike some sites though, StanJames makes it very clear exactly how many points you will earn and doesn't try to make it difficult to work out by implementing complex rules. One thing low stakes players should watch out for though is that a higher rake is taken on low stakes tables so the pot is slightly smaller in the end. One small downfall with StanJames poker is that loyalty points can not be exchanged for cash or gifts the way they can on many other sites. This might annoy some high stakes players as it essentially means you are getting less return on your money unless you want to use them to enter tournaments.
StanJames Poker is still an excellent online poker site despite a couple of minor problems. There is always a good mix of new and experienced players online which makes it easy to play against the type of people you want to and you can even set up your own private tournaments if you want. The software is better than most, but not as good as some and the loyalty reward scheme could be better, but if you can get over these small issues we are sure you will enjoy StanJames Poker.
