Cool Hand Poker is an online poker room aimed at inexperienced players and those who just want to play for fun rather than taking it all too seriously. That said, there are still some decent tournaments where you can win some big prizes if you are up to the challenge. In our opinion it's not quite as good as some of the bigger sites even if you are a beginner due to the lack of a decent reward scheme or high stakes tables to move onto when you gain more experience.
The Cool Hand Poker client is a pretty standard affair, but provides everything you need to get started at the tables. You can sign up for an account directly through the client software and it only takes a few minutes to go through the process. Like many of the poker sites outside our top ten there is only a Windows version of the client available so if you are running anything else you are best looking elsewhere. However, there are plenty of good features with an emphasis on making things very easy for first time players.
The focus on new and casual poker players means that Cool Hand Poker only offers low stakes tables and limits you to playing at three at once. These are both measures taken to try and reduce the amount of 'sharks' at the tables out to take all the chips they can from new players. It's a good idea and one that generally seems to work in our experience. There are also lots and lots of freeroll tournaments you can enter, some for free and some only if you have a certain number of “Cool Points”. Either way these are really good value and a great way of building up tournament experience with a chance of winning a decent cash prize.
The reward scheme is slightly different on Cool Hand Poker than on many other sites. Rake is taken in the standard way, but reward points take more rake to build up. This doesn't mean you are losing out though as Cool Hand Poker just alter the way points work so that you still get value for money. There are no VIP levels to work through though and no bonuses that usually go along with them. Points are really only used to gain entry to tournaments, but you generally don't need many for a buy in. This all means the reward scheme isn't quite as profitable as reward schemes can be on many other sites, but again probably helps to keep professional players away.
Cool Hand Poker is fine to try out if you just plan on building up some experience for small stakes. However, if you think you might be playing a bit longer term we think you are better off soon signing up to a site with a better reward scheme to make the most of the rake generated in the hands you play in. However, if you aren't too bothered about this then Cool Hand Poker is a fine place to come for a casual game.
