CakePoker is a well designed online poker site that offers all the usual game styles and tournaments accessible from a good looking downloadable client. The reward program for regular players is slightly different from the norm and means there are lots of different ways to win cash, even if your poker skills aren't up to much! There are also plenty of high value tournaments on offer for experienced players. The one slight downside to CakePoker is that we found it doesn't have quite as many players as some of the bigger sites, but there are still plenty of good things about it.
Unfortunately the client software isn't one of the good things about CakePoker, which is a shame as it's the thing you will notice most often. While it's not terrible it just isn't particularly user friendly so doesn't make for a great gaming experience. It's also only available on Windows based Pcs so Mac users are out of luck unless they fancy using emulation software (which CakePoker claims many of its users do). Sign up is easy though and you can be registered and trying out the play money tables within a few minutes.
If you can get past the slightly below par client software though you will find plenty of high value tournaments on offer at CakePoker. These include extravagent packages for entry into major live events, such as the Aussie Millions at the time of writing. The daily $17,500 guaranteed prize pool tournament is also a popular choice with regular players on the site. New players aren't left out either with regular $500 freeroll events for newcomers and some low buy-in tournaments that are suited to those looking to build up tournament experience.
The reward program on CakePoker is one of its best features and is worth considering if you plan on playing at any site regularly. There are three aspects to it and the first two equate roughly to a typical poker reward program where you build up reward points based on the rake taken from hands you participate in. However, in this program it's possible to get instant cash rewards by building up reward points quickly. The third aspect of the reward program is most interesting as it involves dishing out 'gold cards' at random to players at real money tables. These generally provide a ticket for entry into a tournament and so can be quite valuable if you get the right one. To make it extra interesting there is also a player marketplace where you can buy, swap and sell gold cards with other members.
CakePoker has an excellent and well designed web site, but unfortunately the downloadable client lets it down slightly. Despite this there are some great tournaments on offer and a very lucrative reward program if you take good advantage of it. We always recommend checking out the play money tables at a site before jumping into anything so why not give it a go or check out some of the other sites in our top ten.
