BoylePoker is a relatively new online poker web site run by the well known Irish bookmakers BoyleSports. It was established in 2008, but in the couple of years since has established a reasonable number of regular players and has raised its profile by sponsoring some well known poker events. While it isn't the best site we have seen it still does everything pretty well and occasionally offers some very big prize tournaments.
If you already have a BoyeSports account you can use it to get started on BoylePoker. It's easy to try out the play money tables for free or just make a deposit and go for broke if you are feeling lucky. Whatever you decide to do you will have to download the client, which will help you sign up for an account if you don't have one. It's for Pcs only unfortunately and there is no browser-based alternative so if you are a Mac or Linux user you're out of luck. The client itself is passable, but isn't the best we have seen by any means. However, it's easy to use and even the most novice computer users will manage to figure it out.
BoylePoker is good to beginners as it provides a great tuition section where you can learn the basics of the game before taking what you have learned to the play money tables to try out. If you decide to make a deposit you are also in luck as there are regular freeroll tournaments for new depositors where there is a guaranteed jackpot of $500 up for grabs. If you think your skills are up to entering a paid-for tournament you will also find plenty to keep you entertained with lots of tournaments every day using a variety of different rules. Buy-ins start pretty low so you don't stand to lose much when you inevitably lose to begin with!
The VIP points system on BoylePoker is pretty basic, but does the job. The rules are pretty standard and you gain points based on the rake taken from the hands you play in as well as from tournament entry fees. As you move up the VIP levels you gain more points for doing the same things so its a great incentive to keep playing! VIP points can be cashed in for a real money bonus to play with at the tables or can be built up to try and reach the next VIP level. As you reach the higher levels you get a monthly cash bonus anyway so it's worth trying to get there if you plan on playing for a while. Higher level VIPs also get access to various other freeroll tournaments where the prizes go up to $3000.
BoylePoker isn't quite a no frills online poker web site, but it doesn't do anything out of the ordinary either. There always seems to be a decent number of players at the tables and some of the bigger tournaments attract quite a lot of players. It's also a great site to choose if you fancy trying to win entry into a real life poker event as it runs its own major tournament. By all means give BoylePoker a try, but make sure to check out our top ten list of the best online poker sites so that you know what else is around.
